If a GLP-1 or insulin pen has frozen, don't use it

Novo Nordisk's guidance on Ozempic is explicit: a pen that has been frozen must be discarded, even if it looks completely normal. Freezing changes the medication in ways you can't see, and a pen that appears fine can be inactive.

The same applies to insulin. If yours froze — or you found it pressed against the back wall of the fridge and aren't sure — ask your pharmacist rather than guessing. They deal with this constantly and it's a two-minute conversation.

What happens if Ozempic freezes?

Don't use it. Novo Nordisk's guidance is that a pen which has been frozen must be discarded even if it looks completely normal — freezing causes changes you can't detect by looking at it. If yours froze, or you think it might have, speak to your pharmacist rather than injecting it and hoping.

Does Ozempic need to be refrigerated?

Unopened pens do, at 36–46°F (2–8°C), and shouldn't sit against the fridge's cooling element where they can freeze. Once in use, a pen can be kept refrigerated or at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C) for 56 days. After that it should be discarded regardless of how much is left.

Do diabetic test strips need to be refrigerated?

No — and refrigerating them is actively bad. Strips want cool, dry and stable. Humidity is the enemy, which is why a fridge, a bathroom cabinet and a car glovebox are all poor choices. The reagent coating degrades faster in heat and moisture, and a degraded strip can read wrong without any sign that it has.

Can heat ruin CGM sensors?

Yes. Dexcom and FreeStyle Libre sensors have storage ranges printed on the packaging, and a sealed box left in a hot car or a mailbox in July can exceed them. There's no reliable way to tell by looking, which is why storage history matters as much as the expiration date.

How should I store supplies I'm planning to sell?

Exactly as you'd store them to use: sealed, indoors, room temperature, away from humidity and direct sun. A closet or dresser drawer is ideal. Not the bathroom, not the garage, not the car. Supplies that have been through a heat cycle or a freeze aren't resaleable, and there's no way for anyone downstream to verify them.

What about travelling with supplies?

Keep medication and sensors in your carry-on rather than checked luggage — cargo holds get cold enough to freeze insulin and GLP-1 pens. Don't leave anything in a parked car. If you're crossing time zones with refrigerated medication, ask your pharmacist about a travel case before you go rather than improvising with hotel ice.

The three worst places for anything diabetic: a car (summer or winter), a bathroom cabinet (humidity from the shower), and checked luggage (cargo holds freeze). A bedroom drawer beats all of them.
